Laughing Gas

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a safe, gentle way to help children relax and feel more comfortable during dental visits. It is a mild form of sedation that keeps kids awake and able to talk while easing fear, reducing discomfort, and making treatment smoother for everyone.

What is laughing gas?

Laughing gas is a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen that your child breathes through a small, scented nose mask. Within a few minutes, most children feel calm, lighter, or a little “silly,” while still being fully conscious and able to respond to questions and follow directions. When the mask is removed and your child breathes regular oxygen, the effects wear off quickly—usually within a few minutes—so most kids can walk out of the office feeling like themselves.

When do we recommend laughing gas?

Laughing gas can be helpful for children who:

  • Feel anxious or fearful about dental visits.
  • Have a strong gag reflex or trouble sitting still.
  • Need fillings, extractions, crowns, or other longer procedures.
  • Have special health care needs that make dental treatment more challenging.

Our team reviews your child’s medical history, medications, and past experiences before recommending nitrous oxide to be sure it is an appropriate and safe choice.

Is laughing gas safe for kids?

When used by trained pediatric dental professionals and following guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, nitrous oxide is considered very safe for children. The gas is carefully titrated (adjusted) to the lowest effective level, mixed with oxygen, and your child’s breathing, color, and comfort are monitored throughout the visit.

Mild side effects such as nausea, dizziness, or headache are uncommon and usually short‑lived if they occur. Children breathe 100% oxygen at the end of the procedure to help clear any remaining nitrous oxide from their system.

What should parents expect?

Before treatment, we’ll explain the process in child‑friendly language, let kids choose a fun nose mask scent if available, and answer any questions you may have. Your child should have only a light meal beforehand, following the instructions we provide.

During treatment, you’ll see your child remain awake, relaxed, and able to talk. Afterward, most children can return to normal activities the same day. Our goal is to use laughing gas to create positive, low‑stress dental experiences so your child can build confidence and feel safe coming to see us.
